The State of Health in the United States.
Most of us would like to live our lives to the fullest every day. We want to maintain our day to day activities and enjoy the things that bring us pleasure, no matter what our age is. We don’t want to be crippled by health problems or overly dependent on others. Living well as we age is more important than just living.
Whether you are healthy and want to stay that way or are already showing signs and symptoms of chronic diseases such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or extra weight, you will profit from the MDPrevent approach to better health, increased energy, and well-being. Even those diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer can benefit. If you don't believe there is a need for such a program, please read below.
In 2010, Americans spent over $300 billion on prescription medications and billions more on supplements. Yet the US is ranked #1 in obesity and healthcare spending. Not surprisingly, the World Health Organization ranks the US 37th out of 50 industrialized nations in overall health. If that wasn’t bad enough, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) reported in June 2011 that “chronic conditions are responsible for nearly half of all annual healthcare expenditures for persons not in nursing homes or other institutions. In addition, more than a third of hospital-based expenditures are for the care of patients with these conditions.”
There seems to be no end to the bad news.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):
- 7 out of 10 deaths among Americans each year are from chronic diseases.
- Heart disease, cancer and stroke account for more than 50% of all deaths each year.
- In 2005, 133 million Americans – almost 1 out of every 2 adults – had at least one chronic illness.
- Obesity has become a major health concern. 1 in every 3 adults is obese. About one-fourth of people with chronic conditions have one or more daily activity limitations.
Scary, right? It doesn’t have to be because there is a solution for most Americans. These statistics don’t have to apply to you because you can take control of your health, transform your life, and MDPrevent can help.
According to the CDC, “although chronic diseases are among the most common and costly of all health problems” there is now “indisputable evidence of the power of prevention” because “modifiable health risk behaviors…are responsible for much of the illness, suffering, and early death related to chronic diseases.”
The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvements reports that lifestyle changes are “associated with a decade or more of increased life expectancy[and]…significantly lower total mortality rates.”
Hippocrates once said that “prevention is preferable to cure.” Unfortunately, most physicians are so busy curing disease that they have little time to prevent it. In fact, many patients report that physicians are under so many time constraints that appointments often feel rushed. Patients crave more time with their health providers.
Walter Cronkite once said, "America's health care system is neither healthy, caring, nor a system." Unfortunately, we all suffer for it.
At MDPrevent, we decided enough was enough and it was time to do something about it.
